to tripping hazards.
17. During transport, make certain that the equipment cannot fall down and possibly cause property
damage and personal injuries.
18. If your equipment is no longer functioning properly, if fluids or objects have gotten inside the equip-
ment or if it has been damaged in another way, switch it off immediately and unplug it from the
mains outlet (if it is a powered device). This equipment may only be repaired by authorized, qualified
personnel.
19. Clean the equipment using a dry cloth.
20. Comply with all applicable disposal laws in your country. During disposal of packaging, please sep-
arate plastic and paper/cardboard.
21. Plastic bags must be kept out of reach of children.
22. If the equipment has been exposed to strong fluctuations in temperature (for example, after trans-
port), do not switch it on immediately. Moisture and condensation could damage the equipment. Do
not switch on the equipment until it has reached room temperature.
23. Do not step on the power cord. Make certain that the power cable does not become kinked, especially
at the mains outlet and/or power adapter and the equipment connector.
24. When connecting the equipment, make certain that the power cord or power adapter is always freely
accessible. Always disconnect the equipment from the power supply if the equipment is not in use
or if you want to clean the equipment. Always unplug the power cord and power adapter from the
power outlet at the plug or adapter and not by pulling on the cord. Never touch the power cord and
power adapter with wet hands.
25. To disconnect the equipment from the power mains completely, unplug the power cord or power
adapter from the power outlet.
26. Unplug the power cord and power adapter from the power outlet if there is a risk of a lightning strike
or before extended periods of disuse.

CAUT ION – HIGH VOLUME LEVELS WITH AUDIO PRODUCTS!
This equipment is intended for professional use. Therefore, commercial use of this equipment is subject
to the respectively applicable national accident prevention rules and regulations. As a manufacturer, Adam
Hall is obligated to notify you formally about the existence of potential health risks. Hearing damage due to
high volume and prolonged exposure: When in use, this product is capable of producing high sound-pres-
sure levels (SPL) that can lead to irreversible hearing damage in performers, employees, and audience
members. For this reason, avoid prolonged exposure to volumes in excess of 90 dB.

SCOPE OF APPLICATION
Unbalanced hi-Z cables are susceptible to hum pickup and interference and must be kept short to
maintain low noise levels, and to prevent high frequency roll-off due to cable capacitance. To avoid these
problems DI boxes convert unbalanced hi-Z line level signals to balanced lo-Z signals which can then be
fed to the microphone inputs of mixing consoles. Professional studio and stage applications use balanced
lo-Z signal transfer almost exclusively. The Palmer PAN03 is an active 1U 19" rack-mount DI box with
4 independent channels. It is the perfect solution wherever multiple signals must be balanced simulta-
neously. The PAN03 Active is powered by a mains adapter that is permanently attached to the unit. This
provides much higher operating voltages than battery power significantly improving dynamic response
and headroom. All connectors and switches are located at the front. In addition, parallel XLR outputs are
provided at the rear of the unit for rack wiring convenience.
CONNECTIONS
The 4 independent channels of the PAN03 Active (A, B, C, and D) provide identical features. Line level
signals such as keyboard signals are fed to the INPUT using a high quality shielded instrument cable (6.3
mm TS). For simultaneous connection to an instrument amplifier use the LINK output which is wired in
parallel. CAUTION – do NOT use the LINK connector for signal input! All unbalanced instrument cables
should be as short as possible, and the PAN03 should be located close to the unbalanced source.
The balanced lo-Z output signal is available at both the front and rear male XLR connectors. These are
wired to the international standard (pin 2 = hot) and electrically connected in parallel. The front and rear
XLR ouputs can also be used for signal splitting, however, simultaneous use with extreme lo-Z loads may
result in some loss of level. Use shielded balanced microphone cable for connection to a mixing console
input. Cable length is basically uncritical with no audible signal degradation at 100 meters and beyond
(300’ +). After wiring the PAN03 Active connect the mains adapter to a suitable outlet. Mains power is
indicated by a dedicated LED at the front of the unit. To prevent pops during power-up the respective
mixing desk channels should be muted.
30dB PAD and GND LIFT Switches
The PAN03 can also be used to feed loudspeaker level signals to a mixing console by connecting the
amplifier output to a PAN03 channel INPUT, and the corresponding LINK output to a loudspeaker. Use
dedicated loudspeaker cable only for both connections (16AWG minimum). Due to the much higher level
of loudspeaker signals (compared to instrument and line level signals) the PAD 30dB switch must be
engaged. To prevent clipping the amplifier should not be rated higher than 100W.
WARNING! Tube amplifiers ALWAYS require an appropriate load at their outputs. Do NOT connect
the PAN03 to tube amplifiers without connecting an appropriate loudspeaker enclosure to the
amplifier to prevent permanent damage to both units.
The PAD switch can also be used to attenuate the output level to mixing desks that do not provide atten-
uation of strong line level signals. The shield of standard microphone cable is wired to pin 1 of the XLR
connectors at both ends also connecting the equipment grounds which may result in ground loop hum.
Since grounding at one end only provides sufficient shielding the PAN03’s GND LIFT switch disconnects
pin 1 from ground to prevent ground loops and hum. Let your ears be the judge and always set the switch
to the position with minimum interference.
PAN03 Chassis Ground
The casing of 19 units is almost always grounded via the rack rails they share. To prevent dual grounding
the PAN03’s chassis is internally disconnected from the electric ground.
