Basic Operations
Outputting Sound
Connecting external equipment
* To prevent malfunction and equipment failure,
always turn down the volume, and turn o all
the units before making any connections.
1. Connect the included adaptor to the DC
IN jack of this unit, and plug the adaptor
into an AC outlet.
To AC outlet
2. Connect your amp or speakers to the
LINE OUT jacks.
Speakers
* Use the PHONES jack when connecting
headphones or earphones.
Turning the power on
* Before turning the unit on/o, always be sure to
turn the volume down. Even with the volume
turned down, you might hear some sound
when switching the unit on/o. However, this is
normal and does not indicate a malfunction.
3. Turn on the [POWER] switch of this unit
rst, and then turn on the power of any
equipment such as amps or speakers
that are connected to this unit.
4. Adjust the volume of the connected
equipment.
5. Adjust the volume of this unit with the
[VOLUME] knob.
6. Play the sounds by pressing pads [1]–
[16].
Formatting an SD Card
NOTE
Use caution, as doing this causes all data originally
saved on the SD card to be lost.
1. Insert the SD card into the SD card slot.
2. Hold down the [SHIFT] button and press
the pad [14].
The IMPORT/EXPORT screen appears.
3. Use the [VALUE] knob to select “FORMAT
SD-CARD,” and press the [VALUE] knob.
The FORMAT SD-CARD screen appears.
4. Use the [VALUE] knob to select “OK,” and
press the [VALUE] knob.
When formatting is complete, the screen
indicates “Operation Completed!”.
NOTE
Never turn o the power while you see the
message “Working...” on the screen.
Assigning Audio Data to the Pads
1. On your computer, save the audio data
to the “IMPORT” folder on the SD card
that you formatted on this unit.

BKUP
Files in WAV, AIFF and MP3 format can be used
on this unit.
* Use “SP-404MKII App” if you wish to use les in
FLAC or M4A format.
2. Insert the SD card on which your audio
data is saved into the SD card slot.
3. Hold down the [SHIFT] button and press
the pad [14].
The IMPORT/EXPORT screen appears.
4. Use the [VALUE] knob to select “IMPORT
from SD-CARD,” and press the [VALUE]
knob.
5. Use the [VALUE] knob to select
“SAMPLE,” and press the [VALUE] knob.
6. Select the audio data you want to use
with the [VALUE] knob, and press the
pad to which you want to assign the
sound.
If you press a pad for which audio data has
already been assigned, the pad lights up red.
When you press a pad that is blinking yellow
(meaning an empty pad to which audio data
has not been assigned), the pad blinks red.
7. Press the [VALUE] knob.
When you select an empty pad, the audio data
is assigned to this pad.
MEMO
If you select a pad to which audio data has already
been assigned, a conrmation dialog appears
asking if you want to overwrite.
8. Use the [VALUE] knob to select “OK,” and
press the [VALUE] knob.
Audio data is assigned to the selected pad.
* Doing this causes all data originally saved
to the selected pad to be lost. If you want to
retain the original data, follow the steps in
“Backing up Your Data” (Reference Manual).
NOTE
Never turn o the power while you see the
message “Working...” on the screen.
Q&A
.Q Can I make the pads play the sounds at a
xed volume, regardless of how hard I press
them?

A
To make the sounds play back at a xed
volume, hold down the [SHIFT] button and
press pad [1] to turn the FIXED VELOCITY
function on.
.Q Can I make a sound keep playing even after I
take my nger o the pad?
.
A
If you make the [GATE] button go dark, the
sound keeps playing back.
To stop playback before it nishes, hold down
the [EXIT] button and press the pad whose
sound is now playing back.
.Q Can I make the sound that the pad is
currently playing stop when I press a
dierent pad to start playing back its sound?

A
Yes, you can. Refer to “Using the MUTE GROUP
Function” in the “Reference Manual” (on our
website) for details.

Quick Start
WARNING
Use only the supplied AC adaptor and the correct voltage
Be sure to use only the AC adaptor supplied with the unit. Also, make sure the line
voltage at the installation matches the input voltage specied on the AC adaptor’s
body. Other AC adaptors may use a dierent polarity, or be designed for a dierent
voltage, so their use could result in damage, malfunction, or electric shock.
WARNING
Take care not to get burned
Batteries may reach a high
temperature; please be careful to
avoid burning yourself.

DC IN jack
Connect the included AC adaptor to this jack.

[POWER] switch
This turns the power on/o.

LINE OUT jack (L/MONO, R)
These are jacks for outputting the audio signal.
* Use the L/MONO jack for mono output.

[VOLUME] knob
Adjusts the overall volume.

SD card slot
Insert an SD card here.

[VALUE] knob
Turn this knob to edit parameters or select
values, and press the knob to conrm your
edits
to a parameter or to execute an operation.

[DEL] button
Use this to delete audio and other data.
8
[EXIT] button
Returns to the previous or initial screen.

[SHIFT] button
Press this to switch pads [1]–[16] to their
alternate functions shown below each pad.

Pads [1]–[16]
Plays back the sound saved to each button.

PHONES jack
Connect your headphones or earphones here.

editing audio data waveforms and more.

SP-404MKII App
You can use the “SP-404MKII App” software on your computer to manage the
audio data you directly recorded, without using an SD card.

USING THE UNIT SAFELY
Power Supply: Use of Batteries
¹If operating this unit on batteries, please
use alkaline batteries or Ni-MH batteries.
¹Even if batteries are installed, the unit
will turn o if you connect or disconnect
the power cord from the AC outlet while
the unit is turned on, or if you connect or
disconnect the AC adaptor from the unit.
You must turn o the power before you
connect or disconnect the power cord or
AC adaptor.
Placement
¹Depending on the material and
temperature of the surface on which you
place the unit, its rubber feet may discolor
or mar the surface.
Repairs and Data
¹Before sending the unit away for repairs, be
sure to make a backup of the data stored
within it; or you may prefer to write down
the needed information. Although we will
do our utmost to preserve the data stored
in your unit when we carry out repairs, in
some cases, such as when the memory
section is physically damaged, restoration
of the stored content may be impossible.
Roland assumes no liability concerning the
restoration of any stored content that has
been lost.
Additional Precautions
¹Any data stored within the unit can be lost
as the result of equipment failure, incorrect
operation, etc. To protect yourself against
the irretrievable loss of data, try to make
a habit of creating regular backups of the
data you’ve stored in the unit.
¹Roland assumes no liability concerning the
restoration of any stored content that has
been lost.
¹Never strike or apply strong pressure to
the display.
¹When disposing of the packing carton
or cushioning material in which this unit
was packed, you must observe the waste
disposal regulations that apply to your
locality.
¹Continuous playing may cause dis-
coloration of the pad, but this will not
aect the pad’s function.
¹Do not use connection cables that contain a
built-in resistor.
¹The nameplate is displayed on the bottom
of unit.
¹This document explains the specications
of the product at the time that the

Using External Memories
¹Please observe the following precautions
when handling external memory devices.
Also, make sure to carefully observe all the
precautions that were supplied with the
external memory device.
¹Do not remove the device while
reading/writing is in progress.
¹To prevent damage from static
electricity, discharge all static electricity
from your person before handling the
device.
