TRIED AND TESTED
T
he design of lead acid car batteries
hasn’t really changed for the last 50
years or so, which is more than can
be said for the cars we drive.
Nowadays there’s all sorts of electrical gubbins
that rely on your battery and charging system
working effectivelyand I’m not just taking
about your iPhone charger either.
Most specialists recommend you replace
your battery every four years or so but there
aren't many people who do this as a matter of
course. Most of us just wait until the car
won’t start and get the next bus to Halfords,
usually being mighty annoyed at ourselves for
not having properly checked the thing in the
first place.
The main thing to remember about
batteries is they degrade over time. Charging
systems too have a limited shelf life and it’s
even worse in winter when the most strain is
put on the whole lot. Its also true that
diagnosing any electrical fault is a process of
elimination, and that always starts with
making sure the battery is up to the job.
In any case, with the summer months
becoming more and more of a distant
memory, we thought this new testing rig from
Silverline could prove more than a little useful
right about now. For the money it could
actually be the best thing you buy this winter.
There’s no denying this item looks the part,
in a complicated professional kind of way, but
its actually a pretty simple, and surprisingly
light bit of kit. The fundamental thing about
this tool isn’t that it reads the voltage – you
can do that effectively with any decent multi
meter it’s more the fact that it applies a
specific load across the battery to indicate its
actual condition. Most people don’t realise
that a car battery can read over 12 volts and
still be knackered. It’s being able to crank over
the desired amps that counts; thats why you
can fully charge a 12-volt unit, whack it back
in and your car still won’t start the next
morning. If the batterys bad, this box of tricks
will tell you it’s time for a new one. Simple.
This products party-piece though is
something just as clever – Silverline have
designed it to be able to test the condition of
your whole charging system too. So very often
the battery can be tip-top and its the
alternator or another part of the setup that’s
not working effectively, so using one of these
is the easiest way to tell the difference.
VERDIcT
I’ll be honest, I’m struggling to think of any
tool that will save you more cash in the long
run than than this. I’ve lost count of the
amount of times over the years I’ve forked out
for a new car battery only to find out the
problem lies somewhere else. The flip side of
course, is when you don’t think your battery is
faulty because it appears to be holding 12
volts so you immediately turn your attention
to replacing other parts like your alternator.
These are both expensive mistakes that can be
avoided in 30 seconds with one of these.
Perhaps the most important point though
is it’s ridiculously easy to use. Simply hook it
up to the battery terminals for an instant
voltage readout, then either flip the switch for
the battery condition or start the engine to
check the charging system. The display may
look a little overly scientific at first glance but
thats just because it can also be used for 6
volt batteries. All you really need to know is
green is good, red is bad, and yellow is
somewhere in between.
As for the price? Well you can’t really
argue with the fact that one of these can be
had for little over £20, or less if you shop
around. In my mind that makes it an absolute
no-brainer for any home mechanic, especially
those partial to a load of extra lights or other
modern accessories. I’d also recommend
having one handy if you’re looking at buying
a new project – it could show up some useful
bargaining chips.
